International Spy Museum
Washington, DC

www.spymuseum.org
Background
The International Spy Museum is a start-up institution, owned and operated by the Malrite Company of Cleveland, OH. It is located in one of Washington’s most successfully revitalized areas near the MCI Center and Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The Smith Group oversaw the building renovation with exhibition design provided b y Gallagher and Associates.

Design Craftsmen was responsible for exhibition fabrication. The Malrite Company hired CB Services for interpretive planning and label writing.

Project
CB Services was hired near the end of the conceptual exhibit design phase when the staff curator requested help in developing the exhibit content. Carol Bossert worked daily with the curator to format and interpret the content of this experience-based museum in a way that would assist the exhibit design team. She became an integral member of the design team, working directly with the exhibit designer, graphic designer and client. CB Services was also responsible for managing the label writing process for more than 600 labels. This work included setting a tone and style for the labels, hiring and managing four writers, one copy editor and one fact checker; coordinating among the graphic designer, photo researcher, graphic production manager and client; and maintaining the overall delivery schedule.

Outcome
The International Spy Museum represents a highly collaborative project. It opened in 2002 to public acclaim and achieved its initial visitation projections within the first six months of operations. It remains a significant tourist attraction in the Washington, DC area.
