CASE STUDY – Institutional Planning
Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center
Fredericksburg, VA
www.famcc.org
Background
The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center is a local history museum in the process of expanding it facilities and programs. The grand reopening is scheduled for spring 2008. The museum sought the support of a seasoned museum professional that had been through renovation and expansion projects to lead them through an institutional planning process.
Project
CB Services worked with board leadership and senior staff to identify a planning committee. Carol Bossert led the committee through various exercises and discussions to clarify the museum’s vision for the future; strengths, opportunities, and challenges posed within and outside of the organization; and goals for the next three years. Ms. Bossert also met with members of the local community to learn how the organization was perceived from the outside. The challenge of this project was to clarify the critical path of activities leading toward a successful reopening while not losing sight of other equally important goals.
Outcome
The written plan was an outcome of committee discussions, Ms. Bossert’s interviews and reflections of current museum thought. It identified specific goals, objectives, and tasks, and provided a decision-making framework based on the museum’s mission, vision and values. Carol Bossert made a formal presentation to the full board in July and the plan will be formally adopted by the board when they meet in September 2006. CB Services provided resources for marketing and human resource consultants, both critical areas for the museum’s successful grand opening.
