CASE STUDY – Project Management
Smithsonian Marine Ecosystem Exhibit
Fort Pierce, FL

www.sms.si.edu

Background
When the Marine Science Galleries were closed at the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History, plans were made to transfer the eighteen-year old living coral reef to the Smithsonian Marine Station in Fort Pierce, Florida. The staff at the Smithsonian Marine Station collaborated with local county government and the Indian River Community College to build an educational facility that could house this rare collection of corals and invertebrates and create an educational outreach resource for the local community. CB Services was hired by the Smithsonian to provide project management and education planning consulting..

Project
CB Services provided council and on site management for the overall project including developing content for six additional tanks in the new facility and resolving base building interface issues. Carol Bossert worked on site to manage meetings with the architect, engineers, aquatic tank fabricators, aquaculturalists and the Smithsonian’ scientific staff. CB Services hired and managed an exhibition design firm, Van Sickle and Rolleri, to design and produce graphic interpretation for the project. Ms. Bossert coached the scientists in label writing and edited the labels for final production. She also assisted in installation.

Outcome
The project opened on time. Staff, stakeholders and the general public were happy with the outcome. The project represents a distinctive public/private partnership for the Smithsonian.
