CASE STUDY – Exhibition Development
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
Shanghai, People’s Republic of China

www.sstm.org
Background
The Science and Technology Museum is the centerpiece of the revitalization effort for Shanghai’s Pudong area. The building designed by the architectural firm of RTKL International of Los Angeles, CA, represents the largest science center in China and, with more than 200,000 square feet of exhibition space, one of the largest science centers in the world. The exhibition design firm of Douglas-Gallagher of Houston, TX and Washington, DC was commissioned to design the exhibits for the first phase of the project. CB Services was hired by Douglas-Gallagher to provide content research and interpretive planning for the project.

Project
The initial phase of the project encompassing 100,000 square feet of exhibition space consisted of six interactive galleries that covered the topics of biodiversity, physical sciences, geologic sciences, materials science and design, audiovisual technologies and a children’s museum. To accomplish the task of researching content, developing visitor experience, and writing scripts for each area CB Services managed and oversaw the work of three interpretive planners. Carol Bossert was the primary liaison with the state-side exhibition design team as well as the China-based client that included twenty scientists and education specialists from Shanghai University. Ms. Bossert made five trips to China over the course of the project.

Outcome
Interpretive plans and scripts were developed, revised, finalized and accepted for all six areas. These scripts were used to complete the final exhibits. CB Services provided a day-long label-writing workshop to build capacity within the Chinese staff who were charged with writing both Chinese and English text. The museum opened to international acclaim and is setting new standards for museums in China.
